Book The Ten Thousand Year Fever

Download or read book The Ten Thousand Year Fever written by Loretta A Cormier and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-06-16 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Malaria is one of the oldest recorded diseases in human history, and its 10,000-year relationship to primates can teach us why it will be one of the most serious threats to humanity in the 21st century. In this pathbreaking book Loretta Cormier integrates a wide range of data from molecular biology, ethnoprimatology, epidemiology, ecology, anthropology, and other fields to reveal the intimate relationships between culture and environment that shape the trajectory of a parasite. She argues against the entrenched distinction between human and non-human malarias, using ethnoprimatology to develop a new understanding of cross-species exchange. She also shows how current human-environment interactions, including deforestation and development, create the potential for new forms of malaria to threaten human populations. This book is a model of interdisciplinary integration that will be essential reading in fields from anthropology and biology to public health.

Book Ten Thousand Years of Cultivation at Kuk Swamp in the Highlands of Papua New Guinea

Download or read book Ten Thousand Years of Cultivation at Kuk Swamp in the Highlands of Papua New Guinea written by Jack Golson and published by ANU Press. This book was released on 2017-07-07 with total page 545 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kuk is a settlement at c. 1600 m altitude in the upper Wahgi Valley of the Western Highlands Province of Papua New Guinea, near Mount Hagen, the provincial capital. The site forms part of the highland spine that runs for more than 2500 km from the western head of the island of New Guinea to the end of its eastern tail. Until the early 1930s, when the region was first explored by European outsiders, it was thought to be a single, uninhabited mountain chain. Instead, it was found to be a complex area of valleys and basins inhabited by large populations of people and pigs, supported by the intensive cultivation of the tropical American sweet potato on the slopes above swampy valley bottoms. With the end of World War II, the area, with others, became a focus for the development of coffee and tea plantations, of which the establishment of Kuk Research Station was a result. Large-scale drainage of the swamps produced abundant evidence in the form of stone axes and preserved wooden digging sticks and spades for their past use in cultivation. Investigations in 1966 at a tea plantation in the upper Wahgi Valley by a small team from The Australian National University yielded a date of over 2000 years ago for a wooden stick collected from the bottom of a prehistoric ditch. The establishment of Kuk Research Station a few kilometres away shortly afterwards provided an ideal opportunity for a research project.

Book Ten Thousand Democracies

Download or read book Ten Thousand Democracies written by Michael B. Berkman and published by Georgetown University Press. This book was released on 2005-12-21 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essence of democracy is popular sovereignty. The people rule. In the United States, citizens exercise this right through elected officials who they believe will best represent their own values and interests. But are those interests and values always being followed? Authors Michael B. Berkman and Eric Plutzer provide the first systematic examination of the extent to which the governments closest to the American public—its 10,000-plus local school boards—respond to the wishes of the majority. Ten Thousand Democracies begins with a look at educational reforms from the Progressive era in the late 19th and early 20th centuries through the civil rights movement and ending with Pennsylvania's 2004 tax relief measure. Berkman and Plutzer explore what factors determine education spending levels in school districts, including the effects of public opinion, the nature of local political institutions, and the roles played by special interests. The authors show how board members are selected, how well the boards represent minorities, whether the public can bypass the board through referenda, and how the schools are financed. By providing an innovative statistical portrait that combines public opinion data with Census data for these school districts, the authors answer questions central to democratic control of our schools: how responsive are school boards to their public and when? How powerful are such special interests such as teachers' unions and senior citizens? By using the lens of America's public school districts to examine the workings of democracy, Ten Thousand Democracies offers new insight not only into the forces shaping local education policy but also how democratic institutions may function throughout all levels of government.

Book excerpt: A middle school soccer whiz’s determination to keep things from changing is tested when his father’s ALS symptoms worsen in this “heart-tugging and uplifting” (Kirkus Reviews, starred review) story about growing up and facing loss, perfect for fans of Shouting at the Rain. Twelve-year-old Golden Maroni is determined to channel his hero, soccer superstar Lionel Messi, and become captain of his soccer team and master of his eighth grade universe…especially since his home universe is spiraling out of orbit. Off the field, Golden’s dad, once a pro soccer player himself, is now battling ALS, a disease that attacks his muscles, leaving him less and less physically able to control his body every day. And while Mom says there’s no cure, Golden is convinced that his dad can beat this, just like any opponent, they just have to try. Golden knows that if you want to perfect a skill you have to put ten thousand tries in, so he’s convinced if he can put that much effort in, on and off the field, he can stop everything from changing. But when his dad continues to decline and his constant pushing starts to alienate his friends and team, Golden is forced to confront the idea that being master of your universe might not mean being in control of everything. What if it means letting go of the things you can’t control so you can do the most good for the things you can?

Book The Ten Thousand in Thrace

Download or read book The Ten Thousand in Thrace written by Jan P. Stronk and published by Amsterdam Classical Monographs. This book was released on 1995 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the Anabasis has been in continuous use as one of the main books for the introduction into classical Greek, it is surprising that there are virtually no historical and/or archaeological commentaries to the text. Much of the training of students of the ancient world is focused on Greece and Rome and other 'Hochkulturen'. In Books VI.iii-vi and VII of the Anabasis the classical tradi-tion illuminates one of the 'Randkulturen', that of the Thracians. This part of the Anabasis forms a 'time-exposure' of an important part of Thrace in 400-399. Impor-tant developments, both for Thrace and for the Greek world, took place in this period and were described by an eyewitness. The commentary is preceded by two introductory chapters, one on the army of the 'Ten Thousand' and one on Thrace. These have been inserted because neither armies nor Thrace normally feature in the classical student's curriculum.

Book The Land of Ten Thousand Willows Trilogy

Download or read book The Land of Ten Thousand Willows Trilogy written by Kathryn Ptaceck and published by Crossroad Press. This book was released on 2015-10-14 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE PHOENIX BELLS Long ago and far away, there was a wondrous land... A land of everlasting spring where willow trees grew as blades of grass. A land where all the dragons of the world dwelt in peace, filling the fragrant air with their silver song. Then one day the wise men came to the emperor to warn him of a darkness that threatened the land and all within. He must leave his palace, they urged, and travel to strange and distant places to seek a bride. He must find an empress for the land, who can light the dragonleaf with her touch and hear the silvery music of the dragons. Or their song will cease forever. THE BLACK JADE ROAD Long ago, when it was always spring.… A road ran between what would someday be Europe and the Land of Ten Thousand Willows, where sleepy dragons stretched in the sun. It was in this age that two were bound together, first by fate, then by love: the young Emperor Ty-Sun, and the Puritan girl, Blessing Dunncaster. He from a cultured land where magic and manners were one. She from dark, brooding Britain, with the witch-power wild in her blood. Together, they must fight and find their way to the Black Jade Road, where each step counts as five — and each danger, ten. For the pearls that are days are running low. A darkness is falling over the land. And the dragons are singing a mournful song of Death.… THE WILLOW GARDEN LONG AGO, WHEN A SILENT SNOWFALL BLANKETED THE EASTERN LAND … The brave young Emperor Ty-Sun traveled the Black Jade Road with Blessing Dunncaster, the bewitched and beautiful Englishwoman who would be his empress. Together they made their way back to the Land of Ten Thousand Willows. Pursuing them was the evil Darkness that felled Ty-Sun's loyal followers one by one. Ahead, far beyond the Jade Mountains, the Wall of Living Stone, and the palaces of the god-judges from Hell, lay Ty-Sun's once-glorious kingdom, now ravaged by his enemies. Has time run out for the Dragons of the Earth? Now Ty-Sun and Blessing prepare for a final struggle of fearsome battle — and wondrous magic — to save the dragons, their love, and … the Willow Garden.
