Book Critical Edition of The Silence of Dean Maitland by Maxwell Gray

Download or read book Critical Edition of The Silence of Dean Maitland by Maxwell Gray written by Kevin A. Morrison and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2019-06-10 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume includes a fully annotated edition of Maxwell Gray’s highly successful novel of 1886. A bestseller of its day, The Silence of Dean Maitland combines evocative descriptions of the English rural landscape, in the mould of George Eliot and Thomas Hardy, with a gripping plot reminiscent of the best sensation novels of the era. It was subsequently adapted for the stage and the screen. In addition to the main text, three specially commissioned scholarly articles discuss its significance as a novel, as well as its theatrical and cinematic adaptations. Students, researchers, and fans of Victorian literature will delight in rediscovering this forgotten classic—the fictional world of which is based on the Isle of Wight. Those with an interest in English landscape, crime and punishment, and questions of moral choice, particularly in an era profoundly impacted by the research and theories of Charles Darwin, will also find it a compelling read.

Book The Secret of God the Universe and Life

Download or read book The Secret of God the Universe and Life written by Maxwell Wynter and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2008-09 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Years ago, while riding in the back of a truck after a school field trip, an eight-year-old boy and three friends talked. On this particularly starry night the center of their discussion focused not on the upcoming soccer game, but on the star filled sky. Who created the stars? God created the stars, they decided. But if God created all, who created God? It was a question that haunted the boy. He gains a sliver of understanding years later. As an adult, while undergoing surgery, he is called by ... a Light. Following the light, he begins to understand more about God, religion, and how the universe is connected to all life. In his fast-paced journey with his guide Gabe, he sees the future and...the past. He then writes about his near-death experience and invites his friends to review his story and give their opinions. The resulting dialogue is a thought provoking story covering topics as diverse as the "Big Bang" theory, the reality of God, human relationships, string theory and the real meaning of life. In The Secret of God, the Universe, and Life, author Maxwell Wynter melds proven and un-proven current scientific thought with various religious beliefs to create a work of fiction that probes the origins of God. The result is a dialogue and a story of fantasy that questions life, faith, man's purpose in this world, and whether or not there is something ... after death. Anyone who has ever questioned religion, wondered about life after death, thought about their purpose here, their relationship with others, the existence of God or the relationship between science and religion should find this novel an interesting read.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation attempts to elucidate the origins and nature of the lost Sanhuang wen (Writ of the Three Sovereigns), and identify its surviving fragments in the Daoist Canon. Through a close examination of these fragments, this study reconstructs various stages in scripture's transmission and traces its development from a single text to a fourteen-scroll corpus replete with mantic methods, cosmological speculations, and elaborate liturgies. The present study pushes beyond conventional views of the Sanhuang by underscoring the pivotal role of alchemy and meditation alongside talismans as defining components of the tradition. It analyzes key notions, such as "true form" (zhenxing), in the sophisticated conceptual apparatus that governs Sanhuang talismanic, alchemical, and meditative practices. In so doing, this dissertation reveals the profound impact of the Sanhuang wen on the religious landscape of Six Dynasties Jiangnan, and in a larger framework, on the development of Daoism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Book of Revelation is the last book in the canon of the New Testament, and its only apocalyptic document, though there are short apocalyptic passages in various places in the gospels and the epistles. This second of two volumes on Revelation offers a systematic and thorough interpretation of the latter chapters of the book. Revelation brings together the worlds of heaven, earth and hell in a final confrontation between the forces of good and evil. Its characters and images are both real and symbolic, spiritual and material, and it is frequently difficult to know the difference between them, Revelation's cryptic nature has ensure that it would always be a source of controversy. This commentary focuses on the theological content, gleaning the best from both the classical and modern commentary traditions and showing the doctrinal development of Scriptural truths. Scholarship on the book of Revelation has nonetheless not only endured, but even captured the imagination of generations of Bible students, both professionals and laypeople alike. Through its focus on the message of the book through scholarly analysis, this ITC reconnects to the ecclesial tradition of biblical commentary as an effort in ressourcement, though not slavish repetition.
