Book Musical Symbolism in the Operas of Debussy and Bartok

Download or read book Musical Symbolism in the Operas of Debussy and Bartok written by Elliot Antokoletz and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2004-07-22 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Musical Symbolism in the Operas of Debussy and Bart?k explores the means by which two early 20th century operas - Debussy's Pell?as et M?lisande (1902) and Bart?k's Duke Bluebeard's Castle (1911) - transformed the harmonic structures of the traditional major/minor scale system into a new musical language. It also looks at how this language reflects the psychodramatic symbolism of the Franco-Belgian poet, Maurice Maeterlinck, and his Hungarian disciple, B?la Bal?zs. These two operas represent the first significant attempts to establish more profound correspondences between the symbolist dramatic conception and the new musical language. Duke Bluebeard's Castle is based almost exclusively on interactions between pentatonic/diatonic folk modalities and their more abstract symmetrical transformations (including whole-tone, octatonic, and other pitch constructions derived from the system of the interval cycles). The opposition of these two harmonic extremes serve as the basis for dramatic polarity between the characters as real-life beings and as instruments of fate. The book also explores the new musico-dramatic relations within their larger historical, social psychological, philosophical, and aesthetic contexts.

Book The Awakening Time

Download or read book The Awakening Time written by Diana M. Olson and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2019-04-17 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author intuitively knew that she and her “new” man were brought together for a very special purpose, prompting matrimony and mid-life career changes to become hypnotherapists; it's as if a higher power sweeps them into a 180 degree spin and a whirlwind of learning experiences. A visit to a psychic fair and a visit to a rock and gem shop thrusts them headlong into an incredible world of rocks and crystals, automatic writing and channeling, awakening psychic abilities and giving them inspiration to teach others how to reach beyond their present realities. And a small quartz crystal “tells” of an ancient promise, as vow to meet in this, “The Awakening Time”. Conversations with spiritual guides contain a wealth of information almost too incredible to grasp. A must for both beginner and experienced “seekers.”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first and only book in English on modern Chinese Buddhism written by a practicing Chinese monk. Chen-hua provides a rare eyewitness account of Chinese monastic life and Buddhist practices before they were changed forever by the Communist revolution. It begins with his departure from home in northern China to study Buddhism in Kiansu and Chekiang in the south and ends with his rejoining the monastic order in Taiwan after spending several years as a draftee in the Nationalist army. Following century-old traditions of Ch’an monks, Chen-hua made prilgrimages to all the major monasteries and holy sites, and sought instruction from many famous masters. His ordination at Pao-hua; “Buddha recitation weeks” at Ling-yen; scriptural studies at T’ien-ning; and a pilgrimage to P’u-t’o, the sacred island of Kuan-yin, are some of the highlights of this candid and perceptive book. The Introduction by Chun-fang Yu places the work in a historical perspective. Notes, a glossary of Chinese terms, maps, and photos help readers who are new to the field.

Redemption or Annihilation? discusses the unusual structure of The Ring and major critical viewpoints, such as those of Friedrich Nietzsche and Theodor Adorno. An interpretation is presented in which Nietzsche's criticisms form the basis of a positive reading of The Ring, whose significance, structure, and meaning are still enthusiastically debated today.
