Book Chinese American Literature Since the 1850s

Download or read book Chinese American Literature Since the 1850s written by Xiao-huang Yin and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chinese American Literature since the 1850s traces the origins and development of the extensive and largely neglected body of literature written in English and in Chinese, assessing its themes and style and placing it in a broad social and historical context. This essential volume, a much-needed introduction and guide to the field, shows how change and continuity in the Chinese American experience are reflected in the writings of immigrants from China and their descendants in the United States. Using a fresh approach that combines literary and historical scholarship, Xiao-huang Yin covers representative works from the 1850s to the present. These include journalistic and autobiographical texts from nineteenth-century Chinese authors; writings on the walls of Angel Island, the main Asian immigrant arrival point on the West Coast; writings of late-nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century "cultivated Chinese", students and scholars who came to America to advance their educations; and the work of more recent authors who have entered the canon, including Sui Sin Far, Jade Snow Wong, Frank Chin, Maxine Hong Kingston, and Amy Tan. As the only volume that covers the literature written by immigrant authors in the Chinese language, Xiao-huang Yin's book significantly enlarges the scope of Chinese and Asian American studies. This body of literature, including works by immigrant writers such as Chen Ruoxi, Yu Lihua, and Zhang Xiguo, reflects the high percentage of Chinese Americans for whom the Chinese language remains an integral part of everyday life. A core text for students and scholars of Asian American studies, Chinese American Literature since the 1850s is an important resource forliterary critics, historians, sociologists, and anthropologists interested in diaspora studies, transnationalism, cultural studies, race and ethnicity, and the immigrant experiences in which Chinese American literature is embedded.

Book Tales of Christmases Past

Download or read book Tales of Christmases Past written by Joe A. McBee and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2014-03-04 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the mind’s eye of the author a fairly large settlement exists at the North Pole. There Santa and his elves live, work and spend each year preparing the sleigh full of wonderful things for boys and girls the world around to find under their Christmas tree each year. The centerpiece is Santa’s workshop. It is fitted out with workbenches and tools for the skillful elves to use as they form their creations. Some of the elves are married and live in individual houses on the various residential streets. Most of the single elves live in dormitory rooms above the workshop. There are many other buildings similar to those you might find in any village around the world. There are grocery stores, service stations, clothing stores, a haberdashery, a bakery, a fire station and so on. Santa and Matilda Clause live not far from the workshop in a house attached to a large barn where the reindeer live. It is a large and thriving village populated with a variety of “little people,” Gnomes, Leprechauns, dwarfs, trolls, elves and so on. Across the square from Santa’s workshop is the TDW, an acronym for the Transportation Division Workshop, where all sorts of wheeled conveyances are constructed. With its large warehouse type doors it is the launching point for the numerous parades staged for the most trivial of occasions. Such units as the Dwarf Marching Band, resplendent in bright colored uniforms, and the Marinette Twirlers, also wearing vividly colorful outfits, spill out through those doors to the applause of the other villagers. It is the site of great energy, all pointing to the most important night of the year, Christmas Eve. So give your imagination free reign and you will find these stories fascinating, and entertaining.

Book Cinema Space and Polylocality in a Globalizing China

Download or read book Cinema Space and Polylocality in a Globalizing China written by Yingjin Zhang and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2009-10-09 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this milestone work, prominent China film scholar Yingjin Zhang proposes "polylocality" as a new conceptual framework for investigating the shifting spaces of contemporary Chinese cinema in the age of globalization. Questioning the national cinema paradigm, Zhang calls for comparative studies of underdeveloped areas beyond the imperative of transnationalism. The book begins by addressing theories and practices related to space, place, and polylocality in contemporary China before focusing on the space of scholarship and urging scholars to move beyond the current paradigm and explore transnational and comparative film studies. This is followed by a chapter that concentrates on the space of production and surveys the changing landscape of postsocialist filmmaking and the transformation of China’s urban generation of directors. Next is an examination of the space of polylocality and the cinematic mappings of Beijing and a persistent "reel" contact with polylocality in hinterland China. In the fifth chapter Zhang explores the space of subjectivity in independent film and video and contextualizes experiments by young directors with various documentary styles. Chapter 6 calls attention to the space of performance and addresses issues of media and mediation by way of two kinds of playing: the first with documentary as troubling information, the second with piracy as creative intervention. The concluding chapter offers an overview of Chinese cinema in the new century and provides production and reception statistics. Combining inspired critical insights, original observations, and new information, Cinema, Space, and Polylocality in a Globalizing China is a significant work on current Chinese film and a must-read for film scholars and anyone seriously interested in cinema more generally or contemporary Chinese culture.
