Download or read book Body Language from Head to Toe written by Per-Olof Hasselgren and published by Strategic Book Publishing & Rights Agency. This book was released on 2015-08-20 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by a physician, Body Language – from Head to Toe is a “dictionary” of American idioms and other expressions that contain the name of a body part. The use of body part-related expressions is both interesting and fun. This book contains about 2,000 such idioms, words, and expressions, such as “with the back against the wall,” “brainstorming,” “sweet tooth,” and “tongue in cheek.” Says author Per-Olof Hasselgren, “As a surgeon, I understand the importance of anatomy and the knowledge of organs and tissues. This book reflects my longstanding interest in idioms and other expressions referring to body parts, and it ‘connects’ anatomy with the spoken and written language.” This book was written for three main reasons. First, anatomy matters, particularly in surgery. During the last several years, collecting such expressions became a hobby for the author. Second, as someone moving to this country from another part of the world, Dr. Hasselgren is interested in the peculiarities of the American language. Idioms, slang, and other expressions are specific for any given language and quite often cannot be directly translated. Third, when one starts to be aware of them, written and spoken body language can become quite entertaining.
Download or read book Walking the Border written by Ian Crofton and published by Birlinn. This book was released on 2014-10-01 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2013 Ian Crofton undertook a journey he had been pondering for years: a walk along the Border between Scotland and England. It would be an exploration both of his own identity - not quite Scottish, not quite English - and of a largely unexplored stretch of country. Apart from the line marked on the map, the route is not obvious. For much of its length the Border either follows the middle of various rivers, or traces the Southern Upland watershed, an area of bleak moorland and dense conifer plantations. During the course of his walk, Ian Crofton investigates the history, literature and legend of the Border. He talks to a range of people he comes across - farmers, landladies, bar staff, anglers, labourers, shepherds, shopkeepers - to find out what they make of the Border, if anything at all. Such conversations lead to a consideration of the very nature of borders. Do they provide a necessary defence of the nationstate? Or are they, in this day and age, an affront to global justice? Walking the Border is in the best traditions of travel writing, combining vivid description with human insight, the whole spiced with a wry sense of the absurdity and necessity of both inward and outward journeys.

Book excerpt: One Foot in Jamaica is a remarkable story of remarkable women as they raise their families -- and sometimes a little bit of hell -- in Jamaica and Boston. When Helen, a Jamaican teenager, loses her parents to malaria in 1880, she is forced to find work on a sugar plantation. There she is raped by the owner and gives birth to a daughter, Eva, setting into motion this captivating story of four generations of women -- the adventures not only of Helen and Eva but also of Eva's daughter Gwen and Gwen's daughter Eleanor, the author of this book. One Foot in Jamaica is a sweeping tale of Jamaica, including plantation life, the 1907 earthquake in Kingston, the country's struggles during the war years, and what it was like to live at the centre of Island society as Gwen marries an up-and-coming Jamaican lawyer, the son of Jamaica's former Treasurer. And it is a unique portrayal of Boston during days of racial prejudice and the Roaring Twenties, with that decade's shocking rise and fall of hemlines and the stock market.
