Book excerpt: 'Pitch perfect suspense...The best debut I've read this year' ALLISON BRENNAN 'I devoured this atmospheric, twisty, heart-felt suspense novel' AMBER GARZA A gripping debut about the secrets of a close-knit community, perfect for fans of Big Little Lies and Little Fires Everywhere. Catherine moved to the close-knit community of Galveston Island to leave the past - and the terrible mistake she made - behind her. What she didn't realise was how much influence her mother-in-law, Rosalyn, has over the island and that being a Callahan means having strict standards to uphold. She soon meets Morgan, the one woman who seems to get her. But Morgan is still reeling from the former rape accusation against her teenage son, Alex, which left her side-lined from the community. Leslie on the other hand is the model Galveston Island citizen, who since the death of her husband she will do anything to ensure her children succeed. But cracks are starting to show behind the perfect veneer. When Catherine's teenage daughter, Emily, goes missing after a party, it shakes their world to its core. Everyone looks to their children - or each other's - for someone to blame. What really happened the night Emily went missing? And who has the most to lose when it comes out?

Book excerpt: Whatever one may think about the rights and wrongs of colonial rule, it is hard to deny that during the first half of the this century those African countries, which then came under British administration enjoyed a period of stability which most now look back upon with a profound sense of loss. Paradoxical though it may seem, one of the bulwarks of that stability was each country’s indigenous army. Trained and officered by the British, these force became a source of both pride and cohesion in their own country, none more so than the King’s African Rifles. founded in 1902 and probably the best known of the East African forces. In this, the first complete history of the East African forces, Malcolm Page, who himself served in the Somaliland Scouts for a number of years, has had access to much new material while researching the history of each unit from it’s foundation to the time of independence. Historians in several fields will be grateful to him for having put on record this very important period in the annals of both Great Britain and East Africa while the memories of many who served there were still fresh, and they themselves will perhaps be most grateful of all for this lasting tribute to the men they served and who served them, for in that shared sense of duty lay the true spirit of East African Forces.

Book Gay Personality And Sexual Labeling

Download or read book Gay Personality And Sexual Labeling written by John Dececco, Phd and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-12-16 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are scientists--who by definition are supposed to be objective and clinical in their theories--actually assuming common cultural prejudices and moral standards when it comes to their research on homosexuality? Some of the best minds in sexual liberation take a hard look at how homosexuality is still defined and viewed by established schools of thought and propose fascinating and often controversial ideas on the true nature of the gay personality and identity. This challenging book explores how gay people can “label” themselves or avoid the gay label entirely while still being homosexual, as well as how others label gay people.

Book Violence as a Generative Force

Download or read book Violence as a Generative Force written by Max Bergholz and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2016-11-29 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During two terrifying days and nights in early September 1941, the lives of nearly two thousand men, women, and children were taken savagely by their neighbors in Kulen Vakuf, a small rural community straddling today’s border between northwest Bosnia and Croatia. This frenzy—in which victims were butchered with farm tools, drowned in rivers, and thrown into deep vertical caves—was the culmination of a chain of local massacres that began earlier in the summer. In Violence as a Generative Force, Max Bergholz tells the story of the sudden and perplexing descent of this once peaceful multiethnic community into extreme violence. This deeply researched microhistory provides provocative insights to questions of global significance: What causes intercommunal violence? How does such violence between neighbors affect their identities and relations? Contrary to a widely held view that sees nationalism leading to violence, Bergholz reveals how the upheavals wrought by local killing actually created dramatically new perceptions of ethnicity—of oneself, supposed "brothers," and those perceived as "others." As a consequence, the violence forged new communities, new forms and configurations of power, and new practices of nationalism. The history of this community was marked by an unexpected explosion of locally executed violence by the few, which functioned as a generative force in transforming the identities, relations, and lives of the many. The story of this largely unknown Balkan community in 1941 provides a powerful means through which to rethink fundamental assumptions about the interrelationships among ethnicity, nationalism, and violence, both during World War II and more broadly throughout the world.
